Ford is establishing a new subsidiary called Latitude AI, which will focus on developing hands-free and road-viewing autonomous driving technologies for privately-owned vehicles.

The wholly-owned business will be headquartered in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. This is where Argo AI was formerly based and has emerged in recent years as an AV research and startup hub.

Additional engineering centers will be established in Dearborn, Michigan, and Palo Alto, California. Latitude AI will also operate a highway test facility in Greenville, South Carolina.


Doug Field, Ford’s Chief Advanced Technology and Product Development Officer, said: “We see autonomous vehicle technology as a way to redefine the relationship between people and their vehicles. The extensive experience and talent within our Latitude team will help us accelerate the development of entirely new autonomous vehicle technologies – with the goal of making travel safer, less stressful, and more enjoyable, and ultimately, returning valuable time back to our customers.”

Ford announced that Latitude AI will be established by a team of top experts. The team specializes in machine learning, robotics, software, sensors, system engineering, and operations. They have a clear goal to develop autonomous driving technology for Ford vehicles.

This will include developing enhancements for Ford’s advanced driver assistance system, BlueCruise.

It states that Latitude AI will help their vehicles overcome dull, stressful, and frustrating driving tasks, such as traffic congestion.


Around 550 employees who previously worked at Argo AI. A Ford and VW-backed company that ceased operations in October 2022, will be hired by the new company.

At that time, Ford stated that they were shifting their focus from Level 4 autonomous vehicles to Level 2-3 self-driving capabilities. This means that Ford is no longer concentrating on developing vehicles that can operate independently without a driver. Level 2-3 autonomy grants the car some operational tasks, but still requires the driver to be present and able to take the wheel in certain situations.

Sammy Omari, the Executive Director of Advanced Driver-Assistance Features at Ford, will transition to the role of CEO of Latitude AI. The company has appointed Peter Carr as the Chief Technology Officer and David Gollob as the Chairman.
